Big news 'Corn' fans! Echo Bridge Home Entertainment and Miramax Films have entered into a long-term DVD/Blu-ray distribution partnership that will see the release of an extensive list of Miramax library back-titles, 251 to be exact, including a select number of iconic horror classics that range from the From Dusk Till Dawn trilogy, select sequels from the widely successful Halloween and Hellraiser series, and many of the films from the Children of the Corn franchise!

The "Cut Scene" Petition

You all know about the Blue Man and where he ended up. But we never got to see what actually happened that put him on the cross and made him an example. It does seem, however, that his demise was a scene originally meant to be shown in the movie! If not fully filmed, the scene set up was at least photographed for advertising and press. Only a couple variations of this still have been released, one on a couple of rare production stills and a shot of another on the back of the original Embassy Home Entertainment laserdisc. Why this scene was cut of the Blue Man's "Execution" is anyone's guess. But it does make one wonder if there were other scenes that didn't make it into the released version of the film. We were thinking, wouldn't it be cool to see this segment unearthed and maybe reintegrated back into the film? It HAS happened before. Because of the fans, all of Richard Donner's footage he had shot for Superman II was painstakingly found and compiled into the dvd, Superman II : The Richard Donner Cut. We want to know what you think. So let our voices be heard Children of the Corn fans! After YEARS of asking from us, Varese Sarabande finally released a cd version, although in very limited quantity, of Jonathan Elias' outstanding score to the original 1984 movie. So let's make it happen and see a possible special edition in the future (maybe for a 30th anniversary 2-disc special edition?) including this and any other scenes that were never included. Outlanders, it IS possible. 2009 Children of the Corn on the SyFy Channel Sunday, January 2nd

Attention Outlanders! If you have not seen the 2009 SyFy Channel version of Stephen King's Children of the Corn as of yet, well now is your chance! The SyFy Channel will be broadcasting it this Sunday, January 2nd at 8 AM central time (check your local listings for exact time in your viewing area) during a Stephen King four-movie marathon that will also feature the made-for-tv movies The Langoliers, The Stand and The Tommyknockers. Directed by Donald Borchers (producer on the original 1984 film), this "re-harvesting" of the Stephen King story features Kandyse McClure and David Anders as troubled couple Vicky and Burt and also stars Preston Baily as young religious leader Isaac and Daniel Newman as his right-hand law enforcer Malachai. Like the original, this version was also filmed in the corn-crop state of Iowa and used many of the locals to play the "Children" of the rural town of Gatlin, Nebraska.

A "Return To Gatlin" 25 Years Later Extra

Welcome Outlanders to a special edition of "Return To Gatlin" 25 Years Later. As this had a bit of info to go with it and was also a location by itself, we decided to give it it's own feature. I'm sure you all know the story. Three years ago, the adult townsfolk of rural Gatlin went out into the cornfield (permanently) while Sarah predicted with her drawings the events that would forever shape the "Nicest Little Town In Nebraska" into "An Adult Nightmare." As the opening credits show a gallery of her work, it finalizes, at least for the moment, on a car parked in front of a motel. The drawing materializes into Present Day to introduce us to our heroes of the story, Burt (Peter Horton) and Vicky (Linda Hamilton). As many of us have done this past summer, Burt and Vicky decided on stopping for the night before heading on their way to a place that was not a scheduled visit on their route.

As with searching any movie filming locations, sometimes finding certain areas can be hit or miss due to the amount of time that has passed. Assuming it was the outside of the former Howard Johnson's in Sioux City, I figured it just didn't exist anymore. I was soon proved wrong and hit the jackpot. Located off Interstate 29 just outside of Sergeant Bluff IA, there you will find the building, now an Econo Lodge, still standing and looking basically the same. It was obvious that the doors were now a different color, but the overall structure was identical to that in the movie.

Getting ready, there was one thing I noticed in the background as I lined up the shot. The original sign had three legs while the new one only had two. Being the purist that I am I was determined to find the proof I was looking for to verify this location's authenticity. After a closer inspection, I had it and the answer was clear. The spot where the third leg used to be, was being used as a planter! I guess it was a creative way to hide the cement foundation where the leg had previously stood.

Here is a closer look of the three-leg foundation. I have found that October is a great time to visit these places because of the Fall colors, cornstalks and pumpkins and the sense that Halloween is just around the corner!

One of the most exciting things visiting where a movie was filmed is to find a shooting location you thought was no longer there and this was no doubt, one outstanding revelation! A very special thank you goes out to Debbie who was able to recognize and direct us to this particular location. Well, like Burt and Vicky, it was time for me to get on the road and continue my COTC site hunting. Just remember when going on your own "Corn-Quest", that this IS a place of business and needs to be treated as such. Next up, we will have the official second part to our "Return To Gatlin" four-part series so until then - Oh, looks like a gas station up ahead. I'd better stop for directions. By the way, don't mind the banging in the trunk. It's just Burt's golf clubs.

Preston Bailey and Paul Butler to attend Little Soldier Premiere and Benefit at the Writer's Guild Theater in Beverly Hills on August 12th

On August 12th 2010 independent filmmaker, Dallas King of Onyx Entertainment in association with ARC Talent Management will premiere his film “Little Soldier”. The premiere will take place at the Writer’s Guild Theater in Beverly Hills. The premiere will feature the first showing of the trailer for his upcoming film TATTOO. The premiere will also help raise funds for at-risk youth in association with Big Kids Care and SBC PRIME (www.bigkidscare.org).

The film “Little Soldier” focuses on Daniel, played by Gabreon Womack, who struggles to get past his problem of wetting the bed, while his father Tony played by Darren Schnase, grows frustrated. Only Daniel's belief in his toys coming alive to fight the monster in the closet responsible for the bed wetting will restore the love between a father and a son. It's Toy Story meets Black Hawk Down in an imaginary world. When director Dallas King as asked what inspired him to write the film, he replied “The true inspiration comes from being a kid that was always afraid of the dark”.

Both Dallas King and Gabreon Womack are industry advocates for the Big Kids Care program. A portion of the food proceeds from the after-party at LIFE on Wilshire be directly be donated to the SBC PRIME program. Donations for SBC PRIME will be accepted at the event and the public service announcement for Big Kids Care featuring Patrick Gallagher of Glee will air at the beginning of the evening.

The event will take place at 7:00pm at the Writer’s Guild Theater in Beverly Hills, CA.

Some of the celebrities expected to attend the event are Brittany Curran (Men of a Certain Age, Legally Blonde), Zoe Meyers (Secret Girlfriend), Danso Gordon (Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia, South of Nowhere) , Fivel Stewart (The OC, Leader of the Clique Girls), Cathy Shim (Reno 911, Mad TV). Big Kids Care Event Move and Public Service Announcement (PSA) Featuring Paul Butler of SyFy Channel's Children of the Corn

Big Kids Care charity red carpet event scheduled for July 21, 2010 has made the move to the brand new XAI Verandah Lounge on Sunset Blvd. Los Angeles based Talent Management Company; ARC Talent Management is hosting this event because they are strong supporters of the SBC P.R.I.M.E. Program for at-risk youth. This event will cater to entertainment industry professionals and was previously set to take place at another well-known Hollywood Venue. When co-owner Christina Williams was asked why she decided to make the change she said, “It was a no-brainer. Owner Nadia Fakih was so kind and supportive and so willing to help for the cause. The venue was absolutely breathtaking and the staff and food was amazing. It was obviously the right move to make for all parties involved.”

The XAI Verandah Lounge is located at 7677 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90046. As stated on their website, the lounge blends the flavors of the Mediterranean with a contemporary California feel. Coming This Fall - A Real "Cornfield Classic" To Be Released For The First Time On DVD

Every once in a while, a piece of news comes along that even though it is not Children of the Corn related, we feel it holds enough content and interest to deserve special mention right here on the site. Case and point - the long-awaited, first-time official dvd release of J.D. Feigelson's 1981 television classic, "Dark Night of the Scarecrow".

Larry Drake (Dr. Giggles) portrays Bubba, a mentally challenged man who befriends a small girl as a playmate in the town in which they both live. One day, the townsfolk find the girl attacked and as she is unable to tell them what happened, they assume it was Bubba. Led by postman Otis (Charles Durning), four of the men form a group, hunting Bubba down where they find him hiding as a scarecrow in a nearby cornfield. They open fire, thinking they have achieved revenge on the little girl's attacker. By placing a pitchfork in Bubba's hands, they try and claim self-defense for what they feel was a justified act against him. Later, the girl awakens and reveals that the real attacker was a dog and that Bubba was protecting her. As the men are exonerated for the crime due to the lack of witnessess, it seems they have gotten away with murder. Or have they? One by one, the men are are hunted and killed leading right up to the gripping and shocking conclusion. Who is the killer? A ghost, a witness to the lynching or was it Bubba himself? "Return to Gatlin" 25 Years Later - A Four-Part Anniversary Series

October, 2009. The year of the 25th silver anniversary. I was on my second trip to the Iowa towns used for filming the original 1984 classic, Children of the Corn when the idea came to me. As I looked at the streets, buildings and unmistakable landmarks, I was thinking, "Twenty-five years ago, these towns were made famous and undoubtedly added to the success of the finished film! What could I do to help make this milestone a special one?" I decided then that since four different towns were used to create a certain Nebraskan community, each one should be featured in a four-part article series, re-visiting the scenes and places that has made this film unforgettable over the years. So, are you ready? Map in the car? Night Shift book on the dashboard? Good. Then, come with us as we make our first stop as we "Return to Gatlin"....

At first glance, Hornick Iowa may not look familiar. But through the years, it has been viewed and accepted by horror fans as a part of the fictional Stephen King town of Gatlin, Nebraska. While this is just one of the selected towns used in the filming, this just happens to be home to two of the most distinguisable locations used in the movie. Now, travel with us just up the road a ways as we visit the childhood house of Sarah and Job.

It has come to be known to horror fans as recognizable as the Tall Man's mausoleum from "Phantasm", Michael Myers home from the original boogeyman classic "John Carpenter's Halloween" and Nancy Thompson's scary abode from "A Nightmare on Elm Street". Although 25 years have passed, there really isn't a whole lot that has changed to the outside structure other than a slightly different color and some changes to the porch area. From my understanding, there was a barn behind the house years ago, but was destroyed not long after the movie was filmed. A cornfield still resides out by the back of the house which one will remember is where Burt is drawn to when looking for Vicky and he hears the church bell ring.

Around the side of the house is where the fake cellar doors were placed to give the illusion of a complete basement. In actuality, a garage at another location was used for that interior scene made up with fake walls to resemble the underground labrynth we see in the finished film. The actual house itself had no outside cellar entry that were essential to the scene, so the doors and frame were constructed in which, the actors crouched inside and came out on cue. Although no one lived in the house in Hornick during the time of filming, it has since been occupied and was even used as a bed & breakfast called the Iva Belle Bed and Breakfast (imagine being able to stay all night there!). Now a private residence (remember location seekers, it IS somebody's home), the people that own it were very friendly and told me that they get about 5 to 10 visitors a year stopping by and asking if it is "THE" house. But "THE" house was actually, "TWO" houses! As the house in Hornick had what they were looking for structure-wise, all of the interior scenes were filmed at another location in another town which we will touch on later in the series. As we say goodbye to Sarah and Job, our next stop is the site of the Gatlin school.

As Burt walked around the town of Gatlin looking for life, one of the places he stopped at was the Gatlin school to have a peek inside. Not too far from Job and Sarah's house is a park that was built on the site of where the Hornick Elementary Schoolhouse once stood. The school was closed in 1988 and then torn down in 1994 after which, a new park was formed. From what I was told, this was the spot where they filmed that scene. Unfortunately without it still standing, I of course cannot be 100 percent sure on this. If I am wrong and this is not the correct area, then I am not aware at the present time of the actual location.

Now, right up the road is another location made famous on the screen. Come with us now as we visit the site of Hansen's Cafe, where the "Adult Nightmare" began.

Located right down the street from the park and Job and Sarah's house, this is where Malachai and his fellow followers turned on the adults and seized control of the town. When I first visited Hornick in 2007, the cafe was then known as the MainStreet Grill.

Walking in, I was very surprised to find the place virtually the same as it was when filming took place back in 1983. The booths to the side had been replaced by tables and the wallpaper had been changed over the years, but the overall feel and look of the cafe was right out of the movie! The counter, front booth and barstools (possibly re-covered) seemed to all be the same with little to no change at all.

The back portion of the cafe, which I was told had in years past had been the bowling alley area, had been opened for more dining space and alas, the famous pinball machine had disappeared with the passage of time. Having the Sunday buffet (I almost ordered a strawberry shake, for film continuity purposes only of course), my eyes were very busy going from my food (which was excellent) to looking about the place.

It was a very surreal experience sitting where this movie was made and I felt for myself, that some inner puzzle had been completed. All of the people that I talked to while I was there were extremely friendly, workers and customers alike, and when I asked about the filming of Children of the Corn, it seemed they had embraced and accepted that time in the towns history and they also had lots of stories to tell! One can only imagine what it would've been like for this Iowa community to have Hollywood arriving on your doorstep wanting to use your town for a major motion picture! As you can see by the picture below, the cafe has two front main windows but it is the one all the way to the left that has produced one of the creepiest scenes in horror history. As I sat eating my Sunday lunch, I found myself glancing at it every once in a while, almost expecting to see the blackened hat visage of Isaac to be peering in.

Now you may be asking why am I talking and showing pictures of my first trip way back in 2007 when I just recently visited in 2009. Sadly, on Christmas Eve 2008 - just three short months from the films original theatrical premiere back in 1984, a cooking fire spread throughout the cafe which in the end, made it a total loss. It's an unfitting ending to not only a big screen horror icon, but a wonderful restaurant and building with a lot of history as well.

The following pictures are of the empty lot that now occupies the space in which the story, or "Nightmare", of Gatlin began. As you can see, not even the foundation remains as it was cleared away completely. It was sad to think that future "Outlanders" would not be able to see the place that started it all and would forever make the names of Isaac and Malachai feared within the world of horror. Although it was very disheartening to view the location, I will always be very

grateful that I had the chance to visit and eat there at least one time before the tragedy. Running on a schedule, it was finally time to leave Hornick and make my way to the next town and shooting locations. Although I still didn't find the exact spot used for the cornfield scenes, I left with a sense of fullfillment (I'm sure Sarah's drawings will predict my return in the near future). I think 'He Who Walks Behind The Rows' would've been well pleased!

Well fans, we searched the corn rows quite a while for this one. So this week, we finally resume our "Cuts From The Corn" series with the unforgettable moment of "That's When Sarah Started Drawing These Pictures...".

As Job and his Father make a stop at the local Hansen's Cafe after Sunday church, sister Sarah was at home running a temperature and feeling a little under the weather. As sinister events unfolded throughout the rural community of Gatlin, Sarah was predicting what was happening at the cafe through an insightful drawing that would lay the foundation of Isaac's reign and spell the end for all adults in the town. With her "Gift of Sight", I wonder if she knew Mr. Hansen's hand would be on the menu as the special of the day? Something tells me Mr. Hansen probably didn't......

As fans of our site may remember, our first posting talked of the cancelled trip (I hate potholes) back to the towns in Iowa that formed the now-famous fictional town of Gatlin Nebraska. Well, this year there were no potholes to ruin our trip and recently, we just returned from another exciting outing searching for locations that were used in the filming! As we roamed through the small towns, we coouldn't help but think "What would the fans like to see for the 25th anniversary?" So we came up with this idea. A video mini-series dedicated to each of the towns used in the filming! We will soon be starting to compile our video and photo footage together for this but thought we would post a preview video to give everyone a taste of what is in store. Over the past year we have met so many people and made lasting friendships because of our little venture and we can't thank everyone enough for their overwhelming and continued support. Before "Stephen King's Children of the Corn" there was "Disciples of the Crow"

As "Stephen King's Children of the Corn" hit theaters and frightened moviegoers everywhere in 1984, many probably didn't realize that Burt and Vicky had taken this trip before! Released in 1983, "Disciples of the Crow" was a short, small budget student film directed by John Woodward and was to be one of the first so-called "Dollar Babies" that Mr. King allowed to be made of his short-stories by student filmmakers. Starring Gabriel Folse as "Burt" and Eleese Lester as "Vicky", the film centered around a boy named Billy and instead of Gatlin, Nebraska, the name of the town was changed to Jonah, Oklahoma. For those of you who have never seen it or don't remember it, here it is as we have included it here in both parts for your convenient viewing.

"You Have The Gift of Sight...." The Drawings of Judeanne Winter Wiley

"It happened everywhere in Gatlin that day. That's when Sarah started drawing these pictures...."

If you are a fan of Children of the Corn, then you definitely remember this line as it gave light to the horror that was unfolding in the rural, midwest town of Gatlin, Nebraska. As the town's future was foretold by a child's artisitic hand, what many may not know is that the drawings were, in fact, not drawn by a "child" at all. In actuality, the creative task of creating Sarah's visions was given to illustrator Judeanne Winter Wiley. We recently caught up with Judeanne who took the time to talk with us about Stephen King, daytime drawing and surprising friends.

COTCM - Before we begin, we would like to thank you Judeanne for taking the time talking with us and the fans about your involvement and insights into the production and creation of the original, 1984 classic film, Children of the Corn. It is a pleasure and very much appreciated!

JWW - You are welcome.

COTCM - By 1984, Stephen King was becoming a household name as his novels and movie adaptations like The Shining, Christine, and Carrie were already very well received and known. When did you develop an interest in art illustrations and how did you first become familiar with a girl named Sarah, cornfields and a little town in Nebraska?

JWW - I have been drawing since I could hold a crayon. I became familiar with Sarah and the cornfields when I was asked to make Sarah's drawings.

COTCM - To make the audience believe these were the drawings of a little girl, they had to be simple yet they were crucial to the storytelling and had to be recognizable. How did you prepare yourself to draw with the child-like qualities that were required and was a certain look needed for them that the producer and director felt could not be accomplished by an actual child?

JWW - I did some drawing with my left hand to make it appear as if someone younger created them. Even at this age it is easy to remember how I felt about many things as a young girl. Sarah's drawings were my first job as an illustrator. I thought it was ironic that after years of art school, my first job was to draw like I did as a child.

COTCM - As three years pass for Job and Sarah, through her pictures we are able to witness what transpired after the cafe incident as Isaac took full control of the children of Gatlin. Were these scenes depicted in the actual script for you to work from or was it through verbal discussion with the director that these "unfilmed ideas" took shape?

JWW - I remember speaking with the film's Art Director more than anyone else about the look of Sarah's drawings.

COTCM - Early on, we see that Sarah has "The Gift of Sight" as her drawings predict the events that have unfolded in the town of Gatlin thus giving the audience their own sight into what came to be. Did you and AnneMarie McEvoy (Sarah) meet prior to filming and also, was the role of Sarah explained in detail to you since you were actually a part of the character too?

JWW - I have never met AnneMarie McEvoy but I did read the movie script and the part of Sarah was explained to me.

COTCM - Storyboard artists usually produce multiple art panels that give the movie makers a visual tool to work from and to see how each scene will work. Did you start with sketches first to give the director an idea of how your interpretations would look or was the first drafts basically what we see on film?

JWW - I met with the Art Director, he described his vision of what Sarah's art should be and then I got to work on the drawings.

COTCM - Throughout the production of a film, many people are needed in specific areas to bring together the overall final product that the audience will see on the screen. Being your first job as an illustrator, was it exciting to be working on something as big as a major motion picture?

JWW - It was very exciting. It's always fun to be on a movie set. I would go in and meet with the art director and the producer, but I did do the illustrations at home in my studio.

COTCM - The Hansen's Cafe Massacre drawing is absolutely stunning and depicts the grisly scene as nothing less than "An Adult Nightmare." During your initial meeting, was it made clear by the director whether they would be crayon-based or was it a decision that was left up to you entirely as an artist? Also, was the presence of full color discussed as being an absolute definite?

JWW - I believe they wanted crayon from the start. I knew it would be in color from the onset.

COTCM - From looking at the characters, we notice that two of them have the absence of color as they are drawn completely black. Was this a subtle way to show there was a connection between Isaac and He Who Walks Behind The Rows?

JWW - Yes, I was instructed to draw these characters in black because of Isaac's connection to He Who Walks Behind The Rows.

COTCM - The drawings, because of the necessary relationship and interaction with the character of Sarah, were essential to the story. Were you given an approximate allotted time frame to have them completed and what was the total number of drawings you were commissioned to do for the film?

JWW - There was a time frame for the completion of the art work because it had to be done before filming started.

I have absolutely no idea how many drawings I did.

COTCM - As actors have a stunt double to perform for them when calling for dangerous scenes, many key prop items that are essential to the movie storyline are sometimes duplicated in case of accidents. Was it required that you make an approximate second drawing to resemble the originals in case something happened to them?

JWW - I don't remember making duplicates but that doesn't mean I didn't.

COTCM - Since it's release in 1984, Stephen King's Children of the Corn has been released many times on vhs, laserdisc and dvd formats. What are your memories of the first time you saw it in a theater and what was it like seeing your drawings "super-sized", especially in the opening credit montage?

JWW - I enjoyed seeing my artwork "super-sized". It's always exciting to see your work produced and out in public for the rest of the world to see.

COTCM - In the movie, as Burt (Peter Horton) ventures through the deserted town, he stops inside the "Town Hall" building where he picks up a drawing of a fire-breathing dragon. Was this one of your original pieces and if it was, what was the idea and inspiration for it? Also, how did your drawing technique differ as compared to that for the Sarah drawings?

JWW - Yes. It was intended to depict the horror in the cornfield.

COTCM - Although the drawings have an innocent quality about them, the smiles on the children's faces send chills down your spine. That's what makes them so horrifying! Does the movie ever come up in conversation and what are people's reactions when they find out you gave Sarah her "Sight"?

JWW - It had been a long time since I mentioned Sarah's drawings to anyone. So, the other night at a party I did. My friends were surprised. I had not seen the film in the last fifteen years so I watched it again with a couple of friends, Yvonne and Alex. We had a great time watching it. We all enjoyed it.

COTCM - As the drawings were completed, an approximate number of 18 different pieces of artwork appeared on screen. As the biggest number of them were shown in the opening credits of the movie, did any of the drawings you created for the film end up "on-the-cutting-room-floor" so to speak?

JWW - Lots of drawings ended up being redone and I'm not certain all were used in the film.

COTCM - If Burt would have known the history of Gatlin, he could have recounted the events when he saw a collection of drawings hanging on the wall as he and Vicky searched the house of Job and Sarah. The house itself was actually filmed in two different locations in Iowa as the exterior was in the town of Hornick and the interior used was a house in Sioux City. Were you available to visit any of the "On Set" locations as production was filmed there?

JWW - I did not go on location. I have never been to Sioux City or Hornick. I am considering a road trip next year with my ten-year-old son. Hopefully, when we drive through the midwest we won't end up in Gatlin!

COTCM - Throughout the movie, Sarah's drawings begin with the cafe massacre and carry on to predict the coming of the interlopers. Were any of the drawings more interesting to draw than others or, in other words, more creatively challenging?

JWW - I enjoyed working on all of the drawings. The creative challenge was to keep the naive feeling in all of the drawings and to never let them look "polished." I did make a point to work on the drawings during the day. It was just too creepy to work on them at night.

COTCM - Since Children of the Corn, you have worked as title graphics designer on the documentary film A League of Their Own, as well as illustrator on the book The Tree Of Life: The Wonders Of Evolution with author Ellen Jackson. Judeanne, what are the differences between working on visuals for the screen as compared to pictures for the reader and also, what projects have kept you busy since?

JWW - Most of the work I've done for the screen has been for print ads. Artwork for books is done larger and then reduced to give it a crisper, tighter look.

From 1984 until 2000, I worked as a freelance graphic artist and illustrator for commercial and editorial projects. I have almost completed my middle grade novel, but it's my ten-year-old son who keeps me busiest.

COTCM - It's been twenty-five years since Job, Sarah and a cornfield of children graced the screen and the names "Isaac" and "Malachai" were forever thrust into cinematic horror history. Since then, the film itself has seemed to have grown to "Cult Classic" status and has recently sparked a Sci-Fi Channel remake by original COTC producer, Donald Borchers. In retrospect, what are your thoughts on the 25th anniversary of the movie and did you ever think when you started on the drawings that your work would become so well known and remembered as fans still go out to buy this film after all these years?

JWW - I was totally unaware of the "Cult Classic" status. I think the people are Stephen King fans, not Judeanne fans. I also believe Stephen King is a great writer and deserves greater critical acclaim.

COTCM - As the anniversary brings new fans and a highly anticipated blu-ray release of the original film, we have a question that has been on our minds. After filming, what became of the drawings, were you able to keep any of them and were you given anything from the production?

JWW - I do not have any of the drawings. The producer would know more about the whereabouts of the original artwork than I do.

COTCM - Judeanne, thank you for this amazing interview and giving us a look into the making of "The Drawings of Sarah". I'm sure fans will agree that, along with the great performances, your outstanding drawings helped catapult the film as one of the most memorable and terrifying movies to ever come out of the cornfields of the horror genre!

JWW - You are welcome.

"The Children of Gatlin" - 25 Years Later The Anniversary Interview Series

It was 1984. Ronald Reagan was president, Van Halen made us "Jump", and we made our way into theaters to witness a small town in Nebraska overrun by a religious leader and his group of community children followers. That movie was, of course, Stephen King's Children of the Corn. And as this year marks the twenty-five year anniversary that this milestone in horror was released, we wondered "What was it like on the set for the Iowa-extras that rounded out the children population of Gatlin?" So after much searching through the cornfields and tracking them down, we were pleased to get in touch recently with Russ Roach who played one of the Gatlin-natives led by Isaac. So Outlanders, here it is. After months of planning we give you, the fans, "The Children of Gatlin" - 25 Years Later.

COTCM - Before "Field of Dreams", Iowa was chosen to host another feature about a cornfield with a voice of it's own. Although the story was depicted and set in the state of Nebraska, Iowa had just the right qualities to make it work. Do you remember the excitement surrounding the fact that a major motion picture was to be filmed in your town?

RR - I can't say that when I was auditioning that I knew what the movie was about. But at the auditions, there was a lot of excitment about trying out.

COTCM - As characters like Isaac, Malachai, Vicky and Burt were needed to make the story believable, the "Children" were essential in making the story work. Did your parents encourage you to be in the film or was it something that was initially pursued and suggested by you?

RR - I had a part in a few plays at the community theater and they recommended everyone should try out. At ten years old, I was up for anything.

COTCM - Once the cast was hired, production was ready to begin on Stephen King's Children of the Corn. As far as filming goes, did they release you from school to shoot your scenes or did it revolve around summer break?

RR - Filming started while school was in session. I can remember missing about two weeks of school.

COTCM - For actors, anything can exist while filming including script re-writes, shooting delays, multiple takes and additional camera angles. Thinking back, what was the schedule like for you on a day of filming? Was it hard to get some much needed sleep the night before?

RR - As a child and only an extra, it seemed like we waited around a lot and the filming went pretty smooth.

COTCM - Although Children of The Corn held an array of accomplished actors, for some, it was their first film role. Were you aware of who the lead actors were as they arrived in Iowa and filming began?

RR - Definitely Linda Hamilton was someone I knew about and some of the other actors just seemed familiar.

COTCM - From what we understand, the weather went from hot to very cold temperatures by the end of production. Did this make it difficult for the director, crew or actors to complete specific scenes as the key sequences of the movie take place in the cornfield?

RR - I guess at my age I didn't notice those things. I can remember specific moments like when they blew up the cornfield.

COTCM - It took a lot of kids to complete the look of Isaac's students-turned-followers who abruptly trimmed down the adult population in the quiet midwestern town of Gatlin. Did director Fritz Kiersch give you much input as to what your motivation should be and also, did he address his direction to all the kids as a group or individually?

RR - I can remember being directed as a group for the most part. Only in one scene I was given a little extra advice.

COTCM - Since filming, it seems the "Children of Gatlin" have spread out all over the country. Over the years, have you stayed in touch with any of the Iowa extras or kept in contact with the principal actors?

RR - Most of the kids I knew were from the community theater and a lot older so not really.

COTCM - One of the big events called for a huge fireball in the sky as "He Who Walks Behind The Rows" is perceived to be destroyed in the final minutes of the movie. Were you able to witness the making and completion of any of the behind-the-scenes effects as they were being created? For you as a kid, being on a movie set must have been exciting!

RR - I can remember staying up pretty late to see the explosion. It was pretty awesome.

COTCM - While Hollywood had it's big premiere, Sioux City had an opening night of it's own. Did you get a chance to see it in a theater when it opened in March of 1984 and was seeing yourself on the screen something that will always be etched into your memory? I'm sure that night was the talk of your school the next day!

RR - It was very exciting to go to the Sioux City premiere. I was really only in a few scenes as an extra, but it nice too see many faces I was familiar with on the big screen.

COTCM - From the cafe massacre to the overthrow of Isaac's reign, Iowa locals can be seen giving their performances, enthusiastically with style and talent. Russ, could you tell us which scenes you were involved in, what it was like filming them and what was your favorite part about helping create a town called Gatlin?

RR - I can remember being in the scene with the blue man in the cornfield, in the beginning and the one with Linda being lifted on to the cross. Also, the scene in the church where Amos is getting himself ready for He Who Walks Behind The Rows and last, in the barn before they go out to the cornfield.

COTCM - Over the years, this film has grown and cut it's way into the genre of horror with a cast of superb actors and an intense screenplay. Now, it has been twenty-five years since horror fans first heard the famous "Outlander!" line and with that, made it's mark in pop culture. With the anniversary and a SyFy Channel remake on the way, why do you think the popularity of the movie continues to grow and still brings the audiences, young and old alike, back to the cornfield?

RR - I would hope it's the ability of the viewer to see movie for what it is. A bit of Americana with a hint of one's yearning thoughts of rebellion mixed with sheer horror.

COTCM - Russ, thanks for giving us and the readers an interesting look into the making of a movie that over the years, undeniably put the "Nicest Little Town in Nebraska" on the road map of horror!

RR - Thanks. I hope what little memories I have are benificial for you and your readers.

Well, it seems that the 25th Anniversary Edition of the original Children of the Corn soundtrack was a very fast sellout, but not the fastest in Varese history. We just received news from Varese that Children of the Corn (1984) sold out within 16 hours, similar to Jonathan Elias' score for Vamp and Jay Chattaway's Silver Bullet. They think the cd that holds the fastest title is probably Georges Delerue's True Confessions. We have been recently notified that Ebay does have a few copies listed so if you were not able to order a copy in time, be sure to check them out!

Well Outlanders, tonight marks the premiere of Donald Borchers "re-harvesting" of Stephen King's Children of the Corn. For lovers of the original short story by Stephen King, this is said to follow the Night Shift collection entry, depicting the original not-so-happy ending that was changed in the original movie. The film, which was produced last September in the Quad-City area of Iowa, stars Kandyse McClure, David Anders, Daniel Newman and Preston Bailey as "Isaac". We know it's been a few months since our last "Cuts From The Corn" entry so with a little harvesting, we decided to hit the road and travel with Burt and Vicky when they realized "There's Something Very Wrong....".

After a bit of car trouble caused an unexpected halt to their trip, Burt (Peter Horton) realized that their "accident" wasn't what it appeared to be. So as Vicky (Linda Hamilton) approached and saw Joseph (Jonas Marlowe) lying on the Nebraska road, Burt tried to console her and explain that things were leaning a little more towards the homicide-point of things (and the edge of a sharp knife). Maybe Joseph would have faired a little better health if he had just stayed in Gatlin!

Varese Sarabande To Release Children of the Corn Remake Soundtrack

The great folks at VareseSarabande.com (you know, those folks that have given us some of the greatest horror film re-issues in the past) have recently posted on their site that the soundtrack to the new remake directed by Donald Borchers (producer of the original) is soon to be released and available for purchase. Returning as composer is Jonathan Elias with an exciting reimagining of his classic 1984 score to the original. No cover art specs as of yet but we will post it as sson as we can.

The new version of Stephen King’s CHILDREN OF THE CORN is set to premiere on SyFy September 26th, and will be available on DVD from Anchor Bay/Starz! Entertainment arriving in stores October 6th. So far, no blu-ray edition to the television remake has been confirmed but we will keep you posted on any new developments. Now, when do we get to see the original score released for the first time on cd??!! Can't ask for a better time than an anniversary can we??

A Special 4th of July Edition of Cuts From The Corn

With the 4th of July weekend coming up, we thought it would be nice to have a Cuts From The Corn special edition and show something in nature to the holiday. And what better scene than the presumed destruction of "He Who Walks Behind The Rows" which we call - Explosion!

After Burt fights off a few ears of corn, Job races to the rescue with a knife in hand. But when the bottle throw doesn't go off exactly as planned, Job rushes to retrieve it and brings it back to Burt for one last (and hopefully successful) pitch. Thankfully for them, it meets the gasohol target and ignites the entire cornfield in a blaze. The last we see of the ol' "Row Walker", he is rising into the sky with a piercing shriek of defeat. You sure can't buy that on the 4th of July!

We are proud to announce that on Saturday, May the 23rd, Jonas has been featured again at the Gasteig in Munich as more of his outstanding work has been displayed this time as part of the “Lange Nacht der Musik” Festival 2009. According to Jonas' Americanvirus website, the Gasteig plays an important role as a sponsor and venue for the festival with over 400 concerts and events taking place at various venues throughout Munich. As Job and his father stopped by Hansen's Cafe on that fateful Sunday for a talk with the townsfolk and a strawberry shake, the town teenagers had other plans. While a menacing Isaac looked on, the cafe waitress poured a little something extra (and it wasn't caffeine) into the afternoon coffee pot that began the carnage that was to follow all over the town of Gatlin. Maybe they really should have passed on that second cup.....

With those words, so began Sarah's gift of sight in Stephen King's Children of the Corn. During filming in 1983, many local residents from Sioux City Iowa and the surrounding towns were cast as "extras" to round out the population of the fictional town of Gatlin Nebraska. All you "Outlanders" know the story... Looking for help (and with an unmoving Joseph in the trunk), Burt Stanton and Vicky Baxter drive about the town of Gatlin looking for help. Almost giving up, they pass a huge two story house and see the front door move and slam shut. Curious, Burt stops the car to take a look. With an unsupportive Vicky in tow, Burt tours the now vacant home in search of people. Upstairs, they find Sarah who used to live there with her brother Job. As the movie was filmed in select towns in Iowa, the exterior house scenes were filmed in Hornick IA while the interior shots were filmed in a totally different house in Sioux City. But in one scene, it seems that we get both houses for the price of one, so to speak. If you have a sharp eye, watch when Vicky is talking to Sarah and Burt goes to look out the window. Right behind him is a portrait of the house in Hornick that is supposed to be the house they are in. But actually, they are in the house in Sioux City. I guess a person really can't be in two places at once. Or can they.......

Corey Frizzell Featured on Nashville's News Channel 5 For "Fallen Heroes" Project

On Wednesday, April 22nd, Corey presented the first completed portrait of his new "Fallen Heroes" project to Birdie Bishop, mother of LCPL Adam Bishop, who lost his life in Fallujah, Iraq serving as a Marine. Nashville's News Channel 5 was there to cover the presentation which you can view in the video below.

In remembrance of our U.S. soldiers who have been killed during a time of conflict, Corey is creating portraits and presenting them free of charge to their family members. When Joseph "Couldn't take it anymore..", he told Job (Robby Kiger) and Sarah (AnneMarie McEvoy) he was running away. As they had a secret meeting in one of the old buildings to discuss the plan, Joseph (Jonas Marlowe) told Job and Sarah to mind Isaac until he came back or "You know what happens...". Joseph also made them promise not to tell anyone he was gone with "Cross your heart, Hope to die, Stick a needle in your eye..." or else they would burn on the lake of fire for all eternity.

25 Years Ago : Opening Night In Sioux City

Twenty-five years ago, Siouxland residents flocked to the Orpheum Theater in Sioux City IA to see, well themselves! As the Sioux City Journal covered the event back in 1984, many of the extras that played a part in making the fictional town of Gatlin Nebraska a name on the map of cinematic horror came to see their hometowns in Iowa on the big screen! Special invitations were given for an advance showing to those who had a part as an extra, were community council members, or a member of the media.

The 25th Anniversary Drawings : A Conversation with Corey Frizzell

In 1984, a movie was released that guaranteed we would never look at a cornfield the same way again. For the 25th anniversary of Children of the Corn, Portrait Artist Corey Frizzell is creating original works of art based on the movie. But Corey is no stranger to the town of Gatlin. As production started in 1983, Corey worked as a stand-in actor for Robby Kiger who played Job and also was cast as one of the "Children".

Now, 25 years later, Corey has painstakingly captured the images of some of the most iconic characters from the movie.

COTCM - Corey, you have done outstanding portrait work on everything from your Fallen Heroes project to your Legends of Country Music Series and last but not least, the Frizzell Family Legacy. And now, we are pleased at the announcement of your latest project - Children of the Corn : The 25th Anniversary Portrait Series. Since this a much different subject than your other works, why choose a movie of the horror genre? Was the anniversary of the 1984 classic the basis for the idea?

CF - A lot of people who have met me know that I was a fighter for a time, they know that I am a member of a legendary country music family and they know I am an artist who has created portraits for country stars like George Jones, Randy Travis, Brad Paisley and Alan Jackson.
But what most don't know is that as a child I played a couple different roles in the original 1984 horror classic, Children of the Corn. I was thinking, how interesting would it be to create portraits of some of the memorable scenes and characters from the original movie by someone who was in the movie? You know, Children of the Corn art by a real child of the corn. And what better a time than 2009, which happens to be the 25th anniversary of the release of the original movie! So all year I will be creating several portraits as part of my Children of the Corn 25th Anniversary Portrait Series.

COTCM - As a kid, you witnessed first hand the filming of the original. Being a former actor, now artist, what are your feelings on re-visiting Gatlin, artistically speaking?

CF - I tell you what, I haven't really thought much about the movie over the years since I live back in Nashville, TN and I have gone in a completely different direction with my life, as an accomplished boxer and artist. But since I started drawing these portraits, it's brought back a lot of good memories. It's been a little surreal drawing some of these characters that I remember so vividly working with as a child.

COTCM - The quality and detail on all of your portraits is stunning and the Children of the Corn series is sure to be no exception. How do you decide which scenes or characters to use from the original movie that ultimately will be captured by a steady hand and a creative eye?

CF - I have just finished the second portrait which happens to be of the evil leader Isaac and is titled "Isaac". The first portrait is a memorable scene where Malachai has Vicki by the hair and is holding a large knife while shouting for the "Outlander". I call this piece "Vicki & Malachai".Since I will be creating these portraits all year, I want to do as many as I can so I will be drawing all the main characters and best scenes. I have had a lot of input from your website in what people would like to see. I don't know maybe we can set up a poll and let the fans decide what they would like to see created next?

COTCM - With the portraits being created as we speak, I guess the questions on everyone's mind are - when will they be available and where and how can I purchase them?

CF - I have been working hard to get my online store up and ready. We are making changes everyday to it. But as of now we have the "Isaac" and the "Vicki & Malachai" portraits in the store. The originals are for sale along with several size prints on fine art paper are available for both portraits.

Cuts From The Corn : The Classic Scenes

What is your favorite scene from Children of the Corn? We were asking ourselves that very same question and thought, why not do a weekly series? There are so many iconic images and scenes from the original that I, like many other fans I'm sure, could not choose just one. And you may notice that the scene entries will not be in the order they appear in the movie. Instead, we have decided to choose at random so that each week, it will be new, exciting and unexpected. Then as each new entry is posted, the following week's picture will move over to the right of the page with a clickable link to view it with the original post. So with that being said we present - Cuts From The Corn : The Classic Scenes. We start the series with one of our favorites. We call it - Burt Escapes.

After being witness to the ritualistic passage of Amos at the church (and Rachel trying to get the point across, Literaly!), Burt takes off only to be chased by the children of Gatlin. Before he is cornered at the flagpole, Burt watches the arrival of Malachai and his gang while in hiding. Although he is successful in avoiding capture, he does suffer a nasty bang to the face from a wooden beam as he seeks cover from Malachai in an old building.

It's been 25 years since Robby Kiger began his narration to one of the most memorable movies in horror cinema. One actor's name you may not recognize, but are sure to remember his performance, is Corey Frizzell. Corey played one of the children from Gatlin and was featured in several scenes. Recently, I was in a convenience store (I think it was a Casey's General Store) paying for gas and a soda and saw this t-shirt hanging on a side display. I couldn't believe it! Well, there was no way I was leaving without it so, up to the counter I went! It has since been added to my collection of Children of the Corn Memorabilia, although it's not actually a Children of the Corn related item. Ok, maybe it's a little corny (no pun intended) but for a Children of the Corn fan like myself, it was a very worth while purchase.

I think He Who Walks Behind The Rows would approve.......
